  • What is Modern Wushu?
Wushu, literally translated, means "military art", but it is better known as “martial art”. Over several decades, Wushu has developed into a dynamic, performance-orientated sport known as Modern Wushu. It is the national sport of China with millions participating in it for various reasons from competition, health and recreation. Modern Wushu has produced superstars like Jet Li and is beginning to become a recognised sport in the UK.
What styles does Modern Wushu consist of?
Modern Wushu consists of many styles of martial arts organized into performance-orientated forms. Some of these styles are:
  • Chang Quan (Long Fist): a style that is typified by fast, elegant and expansive movement, requiring flexibility.
  • Nan Quan (Southern Fist): a style that is typified by Slower but powerful techniques and strong stances.
  • JianShu (Wushu Sword): elegant swordplay using Chang Quan movements
  • GunShu (Wushu Cudgel): powerful stick form using Chang Quan movements
  • DaoShu (Wushu Broadsword): powerful broadsword techniques using Chang Quan movements
As with many of the styles in Modern Wushu, these forms have become standardized by the governing Wushu organization in China into competition forms.
What will I learn in the Dreaming Dragon Wushu Training Class?
Dreaming Dragon Wushu School teaches the competition forms of Modern Wushu in their Wushu Training Classes. Before learning these forms students will be trained in the "Jiben Gong" (Wushu Basics). Wushu Basics includes learning stretching, strength training for all parts of the body, stance training and footwork. The students will also be trained in short forms before moving on to the competition forms. The emphasis in the Wushu Training Class is to build a strong foundation from which any competition form can be learnt, thus quality is more important than quantity.
Am I too old to learn Wushu?

The classes are geared toward learning the forms of Modern Wushu, T'ai Ji and Ba'Gua and this is the main focus of our classes. Although we show the applications of the various forms, we do not have student to student sparring and thus you can be assured that there will be no risk of injury due to physical contact with other students. We do have T'ai Ji Parter Work classes but these consist of gentle exercises which will not injure students. Our aim is to help students gain health and fitness benefits and not to teach self-defense.
